Diaper Washing Care 

So you just purchased your first cloth diapers. Now what do you need to know?

First we have some basic laundry & detergent guidelines:

For all cloth diaper washing you want to be very careful with the type of detergent you are using. Detergent can affect the absorbency, lifespan, and even the smelliness of your diapers. For the best experience possible please follow our guidelines.

For wool products you should use a special lanolin-enriched wash formulated for wool.
For all other cloth diaper washing choose a detergent with:
No fabric softeners, no optical whiteners or brighteners, & no enzymes.
Never use chlorine bleach on cloth diapers.
Note: Charlie’s Soap laundry detergent in both liquid & powder form meet all of the above guidelines.

You must wash ALL diapers & covers prior to first use as follows:

ALL cotton and hemp products: Naturally cotton and hemp fibers have natural oils & waxes that protect them. These oils/waxes need to be removed in order for them to reach their full absorbency. To do this I recommend you perform 4-5 initial washes on HOT with a very tiny amount of detergent (I recommend 1 tbsp). It is not necessary to dry in between each wash, but doing so will assist in removing any extra lint (hemp does not lint as much as cotton).

ALL wool products: I recommend an initial wash and lanolization prior to using.

ALL pUL, fleece, micro terry: Must be washed & dried once prior to their first use.

Regular Wash Routine:

• One short cold rinse cycle
• One full HOT wash cycle with 1-2 tbsp detergent with cold rinse finish
• One additional cold rinse cycle
• Dry in drier on medium-high heat or line dry. I find diapers come out softer when dried in the dryer.

The most important part of washing your diapers is getting ALL of the detergent out. Check the water in the final rinse. If you see ANY suds then you are either not rinsing enough or are using too much detergent. Clean diapers should basically smell like nothing. If they smell unclean increase your detergent, if they smell like detergent then decrease the amount of detergent you are using.

Washing Your Wool Products:
This should be done every 2-4 weeks when they start to smell. I prefer to wash a few things at one time to make things easy. First do a cold rinse, and then fill the sink with cold water to cover all of the items you intend to wash. Add your lanolin enriched wool wash to the water. Place wool wash directly on stains as needed. Gently swish/stir the water to make sure the soap gets to all fabric & removes all dirt. I allow my covers to soak for 1-4 hours to allow the lanolin to penetrate. Drain water from the sink & do a very gentle cold rinse. Be careful not to rinse out that precious lanolin. Gently squeeze out as much water as possible, line dry, or dry flat.
Lanolization of Wool Products:
Fill the sink to cover the items you wish to lanolize with cold water. Add a dime – quarter size of liquid or melted solid lanolin to the water. Allow items to soak for 1-4 hours. Drain sink, gently squeeze out excess water, and line or lay flat to dry. Items may feel sticky for a few days as lanolin works its way in.
